Bob Ross often talked about ‘happy accidents’ in his painting lessons—mistakes that unexpectedly turn out well. The design world is full of these fortunate surprises. In fact, there are countless products whose designers would admit that the original idea completely failed, yet ultimately became surprisingly successful. As a designer, you constantly encounter obstacles. Materials behave differently than expected, the right tools are missing, time pressure comes into play, or production machines simply can’t handle your design. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Why am I telling you this? Because this sneaker also has a happy accident! In the original 2D design, the teeth of the sole were evenly spaced, with the same distance everywhere. But when we turned that drawing into a 3D mold, the curvature of the sole suddenly created larger gaps at the front. For a moment we hesitated: should we redo it? But in fact, we liked it even better this way. The wider spacing gave the sole a sportier and slightly more nonchalant character. So we decided to keep it just like that. And really, what does it matter anyway—ultimately, life itself is one big happy accident.
