Floris van Bommel The Tanker 50163 lace-up boot for men in H-width (wide) in light brown. The lower part of this casual boot looks like a sole made of natural rubber, also known as 'crêpe'. Authentic natural rubber is beautiful, but very fragile. A blend of natural rubber and synthetic rubber has been developed especially for this boot. The Tanker now has the looks of natural rubber with the durability of synthetic rubber. The calf leather lining and the carefully designed last guarantee long-lasting wearing comfort. This light brown boot is made of sporty oiled suede from a small suede tannery in Santa Croce su'll Arno in the province of Pisa, Italy.

I keep a list of quotes I think are worth saving on my phone. This one by Naval Ravikant is among them: “All greatness comes from suffering.” That also applies to this shoe. At the beginning of my career, we created a similar style. The sole was 100% crepe, which is natural rubber. And... that's what I learned then: real crepe means a whole lot of trouble. If you wear crepe soles in winter, they're rock hard because of the cold, until you sit your feet against a heater, and then they melt from under your shoes. Natural rubber also tends to turn white and dry out quickly. You can imagine, there were tons of complaints that season. We vowed never to use crepe again. Back to now: we recently ran into the rubber compound of the sole under this shoe at our sole supplier. It looks like crepe, it's beautifully transparent, a bit grainy, it feels like crepe, but it's not crepe. I was really happy to finally be able to offer this style again. Oh... this quote by George Carlin is also on my list: "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that." But we didn't use real crepe a second time. I hope that means I'm just a little above average.
